Short Description
Biogas is a clean and renewable fuel (similar to LPG) that you can make yourself. You will be able to cook all of your normal meals with it.
Biogas in India is being produced using degradable organic waste like cattle dung (gobar), poultry waste, kitchen waste etc as raw material. The waste generated is also used as bio-fertilizer.
Biogas is fuel that is developed from organic materials, a renewable and sustainable source of energy used to create electricity or other forms of power.
Biogas is organic matter derived from living, or recently living organisms. Biogas can be used as a source of energy and it most often refers to plants or plant-based materials which are not used for food or feed, and are specifically called lignocellulosic biomass.
As an energy source, biogas can either be used directly via combustion to produce heat, or indirectly after converting it to various forms of biofuel. Conversion of biogas to biofuel can be achieved by different methods which are broadly classified into: thermal, chemical, and biochemical methods.
What is Biogas Energy?
Biogas energy is the energy which is contained inside plants and animals. This can include organic matter of all kinds: plants, animals, or waste products from organic sources. These sorts of energy sources are known as biofuels and typically include wood chips, rotted trees, manure, sewage, mulch, and tree components. Chlorophyll present in plants absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the ground through the process of photosynthesis.
The same energy is passed to animals when they eat them. It is considered to be as renewable source of energy because carbon dioxide and water contained inside plants and animals are released back in to the atmosphere when they are burned and we can grow more plants and crops to create biomass energy.
The following are the benefits of the Biogas technology;
- It provides clean gaseous fuel for cooking and lighting.
- Chemical fertilizers can be done away with since the digested slurry obtained from the biogas plants can be used as enriched bio-manure.
- It is good for the climate and for sanitation problems since toilets can be linked directly with biogas plants.

Biogas is made in a biogas digester. We call it a digester because it is a large tank filled with bacteria that eats (or digests) organic waste and gives a flammable gas, called biogas. The bacteria in the Gesi550 biogas digester need to be cared for like you would care for an animal. If the bacteria have too much or too little food they get sick. You must feed the bacteria every day with a mixture of food waste and water. In addition to biogas, the Gesi systems make waste water that is rich in nutrients. This water may be poured over your plants to help them grow.
Biogas systems make use of a relatively simple, well-known, and mature technology. The main part of a biogas system is a large tank, or digester. Inside this tank, bacteria convert organic waste into methane gas through the process of anaerobic digestion. Each day, the operator of a biogas system feeds the the digester with household by-products such as market waste, kitchen waste, and manure from livestock. The methane gas produced inside biogas system may be used for cooking, lighting, and other energy needs. Waste that has been fully digested exits the biogas system in the form of organic fertiliser.
