Solar Energy

Solar energy is the gateway to our future for generating renewable energy. Every second, the sun produces enough energy to sustain Earth’s needs for 500,000 years. Integrating the ability to harness this power within society will make us stronger.

  • Limitless
  • Clean
  • Everywhere
  • Free of cost

On Grid Solar System

  • On-Grid Systems are solar PV systems that only generate power when the utility power grid is available. They must connect to the grid to function. They can send excess power generated back to the grid when you are overproducing so you credit it for later use.
  • On Grid Systems usually require:
    • Solar panels and an appropriate mounting system,
    • Grid tied solar inverter and monitor,
    • Solar cables and MC4 connectors,
    • AC and DC safety isolator switches,
    • Grounding earth cables and clamps, and
    • Power Meter
  • On Grid Solar System
  • Benefits: These are simplest systems and the most cost effective to install. These systems will pay for themselves by offsetting utility bills in 3-8 yrs.

Off-Grid Solar System

  • Off Grid Solar Systems do not need to be connected to mains power. As there is no ready source of reserve power, they rely on generators or storage batteries to provide electricity on days when the solar panels generate less electricity than is required.
  • Off Grid Systems normally require:
    • Solar panels and a suitable solar mounting system,
    • Off grid solar inverter(s),
    • Solar power controller and batteries
    • Solar cables and MC4 connectors,
    • AC and DC safety isolator switches, and
    • Grounding earth cables and clamps.
    • Backup Generator (optional)
  • Off Grid Solar System
  • Benefits: Provides power for your critical loads when the power grid is down.

Hybrid Solar System

  • Hybrid solar systems combine the best from grid-tied and off-grid solar systems. These systems can either be described as off-grid solar with utility backup power, or grid-tied solar with extra battery storage.
  • Hybrid solar electricity system are becoming more and more topical. The basic concept of a hybrid system is to store electricity that is generated during the day by your solar electricity system so you can use it in the evening when the sun has gone down. Hybrid systems are not designed to store days and days of electricity but rather enough electricity to last you through the night. It is called a hybrid system as you are still connected to the grid but have batteries to store power. So if it rains for 4 days you will be getting your electricity from the national grid like most other people.
  • Typical hybrid solar systems are based on the following additional components:
    • Solar panels and an appropriate mounting system,
    • Solar power controller and batteries,
    • DC Disconnect (additional),
    • Battery-Based Grid-Tie Inverter,
    • Power Meter
  • Hybrid Solar System
  • Benefits:

    1. Less expensive than off-gird solar systems.

    2. Smart solar holds a lot of promise.

What is Net Metering?

  • Net metering is an agreement that allows the solar PV system owner to sell excess solar energy to the utility company or buy deficit energy from the utility company using a meter to track this energy exchange.

Following 2 cases take place in this scenario:

Case 1: If at any moment of time, if solar energy generation (kWh) is less than the load requirement at that time, the difference of energy is taken from the main grid and the meter runs forward, as usual. In this case, the system owner is charged for the units (kWh) consumed from the main grid. E.g. During early morning or during late evening/night.

Case 2: If at any moment of time, if solar energy generation (kWh) is more than the load requirement at that time, the excess solar energy is fed back to the main grid and the meter now runs backward. In this case, the system owner gets credit for the units (kWh) fed back to the main grid. E.g. During peak sunshine hours (afternoon)

  • Advantages of Net Metering: The 3 most important advantages of net metering are:
    1. Financial benefit for the system owner.
    2. Avoid the use of batteries.
    3. Produce more today, use that tomorrow.

Key Benefits of Solar Rooftop

  • Creation of value from under-utilized / unutilized rooftops.
  • Reduces the dependency on the grid power.
  • Mitigates diesel generator dependency.
  • Long term reliable power source.
  • Solar rooftop system boost building thermal insulation thus decreasing building temperature about 5 degree during day time.
  • Saving of electricity consumption by cooling system of the building, thus providing indirect saving of 3-5% on electricity bills.
  • Increase in status and value of property by tagging it as a Green building.
  • Contribution to the environment by reducing CO2 Emission at the rate of 1.5 tone/KWh/year.
  • Support for public affairs and corporate social initiative.
  • Building integrated SPV can enhance esthetics of buildings.
  • Government has avail depreciation benefits of 80% of total project cost in first 5 years.
  • As per Government of India has announced 15% of Central Financial Assistance of MNRE regarding Solar rooftop.

Key Parameters of Solar Rooftop

  • Area required for 1KW Solar PV system is approximately 80-110 Sq.ft.
  • Expected Annual generation power is approximately from 1450-1650 units/KW.
  • Expenditure of only 1% of annual maintenance on entire project value.
  • Project life is limited to 25years accept the solar inverter which has to be replaced after 10 years.
  • Project payback period is around 3 to 5 Years.
  • All Public Sector Banks have opened their doors for proving of Finance (Loan) for solar rooftop projects.
